Doors. Please Touch

Touching Heritage at the National Museum of Beirut

As part of the "Doors. Please Touch" project, Red Oak organized two tactile and sensory visits to the National Museum of Beirut for students from the Lebanese School for the Blind and Deaf (LSBD) and participants from Blessed School.

These visits are part of Red Oak’s ongoing commitment to promoting inclusion and supporting access to cultural and heritage spaces through sensory and accessible approaches.

Through tactile surfaces, mosaics, archaeological objects, and adapted mediation, participants were invited to explore the museum collections through touch, perception, and sensory experience.

During the LSBD visit, visually impaired students engaged with the museum collections in a direct and personal way, showing great curiosity and enthusiasm throughout the experience.

The visit organized with Blessed School marked an important new step within the project, as it was the first time Red Oak welcomed participants with multiple intellectual disabilities, Down syndrome, and autism as part of this tactile museum experience.

Through simple and accessible explanations adapted to each group, participants were able to explore the museum in new sensory and cultural ways, highlighting the importance of developing cultural spaces that are truly accessible to everyone.

Launched by Red Oak in 2018 in collaboration with the Lebanese Ministry of Culture, the Italian Cultural Institute, and the Omero Museum in Italy, the "Doors. Please Touch" project continues to encourage new ways of discovering heritage through touch and multisensory exploration.

Red Oak warmly thanks Mrs. Anne-Marie Afeiche, Director General of the Directorate General of Antiquities in Lebanon, and Mrs. Lydia Debbas, guide at the National Museum of Beirut, for their generous support, guidance, and commitment throughout these visits.
